This is the first report on progress towards the six targets set by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) to reduce the gap in life opportunities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. It is also a statement of the Australian Government’s approach to meeting the targets and sets priorities for future action. The six targets address life expectancy, child mortality, early childhood education, progress in school, educational status, and employment. Key indicators of the differences are presented and discussed. The central role of COAG in setting strategies to which all Australians governments are committed and monitoring performance targets is outlined and partnerships with business and community groups are discussed. Priorities for 2009 include building relations with Indigenous people, expanding education and employment opportunities, improving service delivery and improving data.
